Moved to another
jurisdiction and want to cancel your Alberta licence plates and drivers
licence? The following steps are all that is required to do this.
-
The first thing you need
to do is to calculate if there will be any refund available for canceling
your licence plates or drivers licence.
-
Licence Plates
- Calculate the number of full months
remaining on your registration. For each month remaining there is
$5.00 (for passenger plates ONLY) of government credit. The
government will charge a fee of $10.00 + GST to issue the cheque.
In addition to this there is a $9.00 service charge payable to our
office for processing the cancellation request.
-
Drivers Licence
- Calculate the number of full years
remaining on your drivers licence. For each year remaining there
is $11.00 of government credit. The government will charge a fee
of $10.00 + GST to issue the cheque. In addition to this there is
a $9.00 service charge payable to our office for processing the
cancellation request.
-
Full Years Remaining
x $11.00 = Remaining Government Credit
-
Remaining Government
Credit - $10.60 = Projected Refund Cheque Amount
-
Projected Refund
Cheque Amount - $9.54 (S/C) = Effective Refund Amount
-
If once you have
determined that it is worth processing the cancellation(s) you will need
to submit a written request to our office with a cheque for the service
charge required for each item you want us to cancel.
The request needs to include:
-
Date
-
Licence plate number(s)
and/or drivers licence number(s) that you are requesting the
cancellation(s) for.
-
Your new address -
Place to have cheque mailed out to.
-
Signature(s)
(Signatures from all individuals involved are required)
-
Include the original
plate surrender certificate(s) if you received one from your new
jurisdiction when you switched your plates over. This will allow
us to back date your cancellation to that date instead of the date we
received your request.
