Steps To Take To |
||
| 1. | If the vehicle is being imported from the United States you need to contact The Registrar of Imported Vehicles at 1-888-848-8240 (www.riv.ca) They will advise you if there are any tariff charges for your vehicle and if you need a federal inspection. Federal inspections are checking for manufacturer’s differences (i.e., running lights etc) You should also ask where you can get that kind of inspection done in your area. | |
| 2. | If the vehicle is being imported from outside of North America you need to contact Canada Customs at 1-800-461-9999. They will advise you if the vehicle con be imported to Canada and what, if any, conditions apply. | |
| 3. | If the vehicle is coming into Alberta from another jurisdiction you will have to comply with provincial regulations. You should follow these steps: | |
| a) | Contact an Alberta Registry Agent. Look in the yellow pages of your phone book under Licensing and Registry Services. Tell them you want to register a vehicle and ask the cost, including their service charges. They will also advise you what other documentation you need (i.e., proof of ownership, insurance, etc.) You are encouraged to phone around as the Registry Agents make their living from the service charges, so prices can vary. Once you take up residence you have 3 months to transfer your personal driver license and vehicle registration. (unless your registration/insurance from the other jurisdiction runs out prior to the 3 months). | |
| b) | The Registry Agent will sell you a "Request for Vehicle Inspection" form. They will charge you a service charge for this. You need this form before you take the vehicle to get inspected. Once this form is purchased you hove 14 days to get the vehicle inspected and return the paperwork to a Registry Agent. They will complete the process and give you Alberta plates and stickers. | |
| c) | To locate a technician to perform the "Out of Province Inspection" call Alberta Transportation at 1-800-666-5036. We have a list of technicians registered for this program. (some Registry Agents also have names) The cost of this inspection can vary, so you are encouraged to call around and get the best price and/or convenience for yourself. The inspection should take about 2 hours of a technicians time to complete (you can use this as a base for cost comparison). | |
| d) | Once the technician has completed the inspection he will sign off the paperwork. If there are additional repairs needed X they must be completed before the vehicle can be registered. You then return to the Registry Agent to complete the process. Your copy of the Out of Province inspection must be presented as part of the registration process. | |
